My apologies for the redundant post. On looking through what I had submitted earlier today I saw that I had inadvertantly snipped out the question which this post is intended to answer.

An ancestry for Avice is as follows:

1 Avice de MARMION.

I found the following link recently. I have many doubts about this, since I was under the impression that it was not certain where Walter PALMER of Mass. was from. The early part is verifiable, but the real problem I see is putting Walter as a son of John. What do you all think?

(abbreviated facts for easier posting/reading)

1. John of Gaunt = Katherine Roet

2. Henry Beaufort, Cardinal (1375-1447) = Alice FitzAlan (mistress)

3. Jane (Joan) Beaufort (1391-?) = Sir Edward Stradling (1389-1453)

4. Sir Henry Stradling (1423-1477) = Elizabeth Herbert (?-?)

5. Thomas Stradling (1450-1480) = Janet Mathew (1455-1480)

6. Sir Edward Stradling (1474-1535) = Elizabeth Arundel (1484-1513)

7. Catherine Stradling (1512-1585) = Sir Thomas Palmer (1508-1585)

8. John Palmer (1544-?) = Elizabeth Verney

9. Walter Palmer of Mass. m1 Ann/Elizabeth m2 Rebecca Short

I am a Medieval History buff who has become more and more involved with genealogy as a part off that interest. As a member of this mail list, I usually confine myself to "lurking", picking up sizable bits and pieces of information and archiving most of the messages even though they didn't apply to any of my work in process...Who knows what turn my next line takes.

There was a posting recently (I no longer have the file and I'veforgotten who the kind benafactor was), giving the links for the downloadable files for the Heimskringla. I thought it was a wondeful idea to do so since printed source material can get so expensive. I applaud the impulse behind the posting.

Thinking about it since, it occurs to me that there are many other books also available if one knows where to look, and there might be value in listing some of the better links and sites offering the opportunity to either download or search some of the important documents in medieval history, such as the Anglo Saxon Chonicle, various Domesday Books, Cronicles of El Cid, etc.

Here's a list of some of my favorite sources, I hope they prove useful to the listmembers.

The Internet Medieval Sourcebook - MAJOR source for important downloadable medieval texts. http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/sbook.html

The Thesaurus Linguarum Hiberniae is a joint project of the Royal Irish Academy and University College Cork (CURIA) to create an interactive on-line searchable database archive of literary and historical materials in the various languages of early, medieval and modern Ireland. http://curia.ucc.ie/curia/

Anglo-Saxon History: A Select Bibliography - Simon Keynes http://www.wmich.edu/medieval/rawl/keynes1/home.htm

Harvard's Medieval Scandinavia and Anglo-Saxon Britain: Literature, Culture, History http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~layher1/medscan.html

Georgetown University's Medieval History Department, choose Medieval Studies Text, Image and Archival Databases. http://www.georgetown.edu/labyrinth/labyrinth-home.html

Berkely Digital Library - The Online Medieval & Classical Library http:\\sunsite.berkely.edu

NetSERF - Connections to many Medieval Resources. http://www.cua.edu/www/hist/netserf/home.htm

EuroDocs: Primary Historical Documents From Western Europ Selected Transcriptions, Facsimiles and Translations http://library.byu.edu/~rdh/eurodocs/

Many of these sites have links to other similar sites and there are repeats of links and multiple sources for some of the same documents, but all are well worth visiting. Enjoy.

> I'm hoping someone can comment on the ancestry of Catherine Stradling, born about 1512 said to be the daughter of Edward Stradling and Elizabeth Arundel.

Kathryn - From Blood Royal: Issue of the Kings and Queens of Medieval England by T. Anna Leese, pg. 289 (in an article about various Beaufort women): "Still another Joan Beaufort was the illegitimate daughter of Henry Beaufort (d. 11 Apr 1447), Bishop of Winchester, Chancellor of England, and one of the four illegitimate children of John of Gaunt. This Joan's mother was Alice FitzAlan (b. abt 1373/1375), daughter of Richard FitzAlan (d. 24 Jan 1375/1376), Earl of Arundel. Joan (b. 1392) m. Edward Stradling (d. in Jerusalem), Kt., of St. Donat's, county of Glamorgan, Knight of the Sepulchre 1476."
