WILLIAM PALMER
[c 1585 1637]
FRANCES
[c 1585 bef 1633]

TENTH GREAT GRANDPARENTS

William Palmer, one of our tenth great grandfathers, sailed from
England in the Fortune which left London in early July 1621 and arrived
in Plymouth on November 11. Among the 34 persons sailing with him was
his son and daughterinlawWilliam Jr and his wife. William Sr's
wife, whom we know only as Frances, did not sail with them, but arrived
in Plymouth two years later in 1623 on the Anne which sailed from London
along with the Little James with about 60 passengers in all. It was not
uncommon among the early Pilgrims that husbands and wives did not come
together on the same ships. This was due to limited space on the ships,
and sometimes, limited finances as well.

William Sr, often referred to in records as "the elder" or "thelder",
was a "nayler" by occupation. He was evidently much older than the
other passengers. Records in 1626 in Plymouth show him as a purchaser.
We know nothing of his background, but evidence is somewhat strong that
he was from London since he had a servant called Carvanyell, an odd
surname found in Stepney. There are records of marriages between the
Palmers and Bassetts at St. Mary's, Whitechapel, the adjoining parish.
But we have no documents that prove William Palmer's ancestry or his
wife'sname. Claims that William Palmer was the son of Sir John
(William) Palmer and Elizabeth Verney have been proven in error by
Carlton Palmer in an article in The Colonial Genealogist. The bishop's
transcript at Parham had been read: "Willm, younger sonne of William
Palmer, Esquire, was baptized on 18 April 1585." Actually it should
read "the child, William, was buried on 18 April 1585."

In the land allotment records for Plymouth in 1623, William Palmer Sr
received two oneacre lots, one in his name and one for his son who
travelled with him on the Fortune. His wife Frances received one acre
as a passenger on the Anne. In the division of cattle in 1627, he, his
son William Jr, and his wife, Frances, were all listed. In the tax of
January 2, 1632/33, William Sr was taxed 7 shillings. The following
year's list showed both him and his son as owning property. William Sr
was taxed 18 shillings and William Jr 9 shillings. Both are listed as
freemen on the Plymouth list of 1633 which entitled them not only to own
land, but also to bear arms.

A few years later, William Sr moved from Plymouth to Duxbury where he
remained until his death. His wife, Frances, probably died around this
time, but norecords of her death have been located. William Sr died not
long afterwards in 1637, between November 7 when he wrote his will and
November 13 when an inventory of his estate was taken. We learn from
his will that after his first wife died, he remarried to a "young woman"
whom he does not name. He begins his will:
"I, William Palmer, of Duxborrow, Nayler, appoint my loving friends,
Mr. Bradford, Mr. Winslow, and Mr. Pence, my executors. Whereas I have
married a young woman who is dear to me, I desire she may have not less
than one third of my estate. To Rebecca, my grandchild, and Moyses
Rowly, whom I love, . . ."

William Palmer's will was probated March 5, 1638/39. From various
records, we learn only that his young wife's name was Mary and that she
was pregnant with his child at the time of his death. This child, who
was also named William Palmer, was born June 27, 1638. William Palmer
Jr, son of William Sr and his wife Frances had died the year before his
father. William Jr had married Elizabeth Hodgkins in 1634, and in
1635/36 they had a daughter named Rebecca. This is the Rebecca
mentioned in William Sr's will as his grandchild. Also mentioned in the
same sentence with William Sr's granddaughter is Moses Rowley for whose
upbringing William Sr made provisions. It is almost certain that Moses
Rowley was his grandsonthe son of Henry Rowley and his daughter Sarah
or possibly Ann.

At the end of his will, William Sr mentioned his "son Henry and
daughter Bridget" and left them 40 shillings each. The Henry could
have been a son of whom we have no records. Possibly it was his son
inlaw, Henry Rowley, who married one of William's daughter who had died
several years before her father. At the period in question, second and
third marriages were quite common due to early deaths caused by
sickness, and the terms sons and daughter were often used for stepsons
and stepdaughters as well as for sonsinlaw and daughtersinlaw. At
the bottom of his will, he made his markan upside down Y. Three men
were assigned by the court to make and inventory of William Palmer Sr's
property. One of them was Jonathan Brewster, one of our ancestorsour
ninth great grandfatherswho sailed to Plymouth on the same ship with
William Palmer.

William Sr's will was somewhat vague and several lawsuits resulted. On
February 2, 1637/38, John Willis and Elizabeth his wife (Elizabeth was
the daughterinlaw of William Sr and the wife of his deceased son
William Jr) complained in court against William Bradford, Edward
Winslow, and Thomas Pence, the executors of William Palmer's will, that
they had right to a plot of land owned by William Sr. Another suit was
brought as late as October 20, 1646, by William Sr's "young wife" Mary
Paddock, who remarried between 1644 and 1646 to Robert Paddock. It was
the second marriage for each of them.

While we do not know very much about William Palmer and his first
wife, Frances, we do know that William Palmer Sr was well respected in
Plymouth, judging by whom he named as his executors and whom the court
named to handle the inventorynames well respected in Plymouth:
Bradford, Winslow, Pence, and Brewster. William Palmer's estate
totalled £111. 12s. and 4p.

I have collected the following on the Ancestors of Walter Palmer of
Stonington. I am looking for comments on its validity. I have had mixed
reviews on the reliability of the main reference: Crispin, M. Jackson, and
Leonce Macary, 1938. Falaise Roll Recording Prominent Companions of William
Duke of Normandy at the Conquest of England. Butler and Tanner Ltd., London.
